Amanda Fincher Counseling in Annapolis

Amanda Fincher, LCPC

Therapist and Founder of SoCo Counseling

I founded Amanda Fincher—Counseling for Girls in 2017 and expanded the practice into SoCo Counseling in 2018. My goal has always been to provide high-quality mental health services to individuals and families in Southern Anne Arundel County while increasing access to virtual therapy throughout Maryland.

My clinical work began with a strong focus on preteen and teenage girls, as well as the mothers and caregivers supporting them. Over time, my interests expanded to include maternal mental health, perinatal and postpartum support, parenting concerns, family relationships, and the emotional challenges women experience throughout different stages of motherhood.

Maternal and Perinatal Mental Health

The perinatal period includes pregnancy and the first year after childbirth. This stage of life can bring joy and excitement, but it can also involve significant hormonal, physical, emotional, and relationship changes.

Women may experience concerns such as:

  • Anxiety about pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, or the future

  • Postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety

  • Birth trauma or complications during delivery

  • Pregnancy loss and grief

  • Difficulty adjusting to motherhood

  • Changes in identity and self-confidence

  • Relationship stress after having a baby

  • Feelings of isolation, guilt, or overwhelm

  • Challenges balancing parenting, work, and personal needs

Perinatal mental health therapy offers mothers a supportive place to process these experiences, strengthen coping skills, and navigate the transition into parenthood.

My professional interests include supporting women during pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, motherhood, parenting transitions, and other stages of maternal life.

Counseling for Mothers and Parents

Parenting can be deeply rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, stressful, and emotionally complicated. Many mothers feel responsible for managing their children’s needs, household responsibilities, relationships, careers, and their own mental health all at once.

My work with mothers and parents focuses on concerns such as:

  • Parenting stress

  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm

  • Parent-child communication

  • Raising preteens and teenagers

  • Setting healthy boundaries

  • Family conflict

  • Supporting children with emotional or behavioral concerns

  • Balancing parenting with personal needs

  • Adjusting to changes within the family

  • Strengthening parenting confidence

I believe parents deserve support, compassion, and practical tools as they navigate the changing needs of their children and families.

Therapy for Preteen and Teenage Girls

My professional background includes extensive experience working with preteen and teenage girls. Adolescence can bring major changes involving identity, friendships, school expectations, family relationships, body image, puberty, and emotional development.

I have supported girls experiencing:

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • Low self-esteem

  • Body image concerns

  • Puberty and developmental changes

  • School stress

  • Friendship and peer difficulties

  • Family conflict

  • Emotional regulation challenges

  • Social anxiety

  • Attention and executive functioning concerns

  • Difficulty communicating their needs

  • Life transitions and family changes

My approach emphasizes emotional safety, healthy communication, confidence, coping skills, and helping young people better understand themselves.

Experience Working With Children

As a professional school counselor and child therapist, I have worked closely with children from prekindergarten through eighth grade. My experience includes supporting children with a variety of developmental, academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

Children may communicate distress through changes in behavior, irritability, withdrawal, school avoidance, frequent worries, physical complaints, or difficulty managing emotions. Counseling can help children develop age-appropriate coping skills, improve emotional awareness, and strengthen communication with parents and caregivers.

I have also helped develop and implement more than 100 Section 504 Plans for students requiring educational accommodations and additional school-based support.

Education and Professional Background

I was born and raised in Cecil County, Maryland. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Master of Education in School Counseling from the University of Maryland, College Park.

My professional experience includes work as:

  • A Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor

  • A professional school counselor

  • A child and adolescent therapist

  • A National Board Certified Teacher and School Counselor

  • A mental health trainer and presenter

  • A crisis and disaster-response volunteer

My training includes mental health, suicide prevention, trauma-focused therapy, crisis intervention, emergency planning, and disaster response.

Through the American Red Cross, I have used these skills to support first responders and individuals affected by natural disasters.

Workshops and Professional Presentations

As a National Board Certified Teacher and School Counselor, I have presented at national conferences on topics including Measuring Mindfulness in a School Setting and Implementing Second Step.

I have also delivered more than 100 mental health workshops and presentations for parents, educators, school leaders, and community professionals.

Presentation topics have included:

  • Mental health awareness

  • Mindfulness

  • Child development

  • Social-emotional learning

  • School counseling

  • Crisis intervention

  • Trauma-informed support

  • Supporting children and families

  • Emotional regulation

  • Parenting and communication

Mindfulness and Reiki

I am also a Master Reiki Practitioner and enjoy incorporating mindfulness, grounding strategies, and mind-body awareness into therapeutic work with teens and adults.

Mindfulness-based approaches can help individuals slow down, recognize emotional and physical reactions, manage stress, and develop greater awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and needs.
