We’re excited to announce the newest addition to our team: Shakira, a Licensed Graduate Marriage and Family Therapist (LGMFT) with a passion for helping children, teens, individuals, and families thrive. With extensive experience and specialized training, Shakira brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to her practice.
Shakira earned her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy, along with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Child Therapy. Over the course of her career, she has worked with a diverse range of clients, including children, teens, individuals, and couples. Her expertise spans addressing behavioral challenges, managing ADHD, navigating anxiety, coping with life transitions, and fostering healthy, restorative relationships within families.
With nearly a decade of experience, Shakira has served children in a variety of settings, from child-care centers and schools to one-on-one mentoring programs. She understands the joys and challenges that come with caregiving roles and is passionate about providing support for both children and their parents. Shakira’s work is rooted in enhancing connections within parent-child relationships, empowering families to build stronger bonds and navigate life’s complexities together.
Shakira also works with adults, offering therapy for individuals and couples dealing with relational difficulties, self-esteem challenges, life transitions, and trauma. Her approach is attachment-oriented and trauma-informed, integrating insights from neurobiology with the importance of relational connection. This perspective allows her to guide clients through life’s emotional ups and downs with a sense of understanding and empathy.
In her sessions, Shakira creates a therapeutic environment that balances playfulness, insight, and compassion. She uses techniques such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Play Therapy, and systemic modalities to help clients find healing and growth. Her goal is to foster emotional safety and provide a space where life’s adversities can be met with grace and resilience.
Outside of her professional work, Shakira enjoys living in Maryland, spending quality time with loved ones, cooking, and writing. Her personal interests reflect her dedication to nurturing connections and finding joy in meaningful moments.
We’re thrilled to have Shakira join our team, and we’re confident that her skills, warmth, and expertise will make a positive impact on the lives of her clients.
